Timing Matters
Medicare enrollment periods & deadlines
Miss a window and you could face lifelong penalties. Here's when you can enroll or make changes.
Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)
The 7-month window around your 65th birthday
Starts 3 months before the month you turn 65, includes your birthday month, and ends 3 months after. This is when most people first sign up for Medicare.
Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)
October 15 – December 7 each year
Switch between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage, change Advantage or Part D plans, or join a drug plan. Changes take effect January 1.
Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment
January 1 – March 31 each year
If you're already in a Medicare Advantage plan, you can switch to another Advantage plan or return to Original Medicare during this window.
Special Enrollment Periods (SEP)
Triggered by qualifying life events
Moving, losing employer coverage, or other life changes may open a window to make changes outside the standard periods.
Don't risk a late penalty. Penalties for late Part B and Part D enrollment can last as long as you have coverage. If you're unsure which window applies to you, reach out — we'll help you stay on track.
