Medicare Supplement Plan G explained

Plan G is one of the most comprehensive Medigap plans available — here's what it covers, what it costs, and how to enroll.

What is Medicare Supplement Plan G?

Medicare Supplement Plan G (also called Medigap Plan G) is a private insurance plan that works alongside Original Medicare to cover most of the out-of-pocket costs you'd otherwise pay yourself. After you meet the annual Part B deductible, Plan G covers nearly everything else — giving you predictable healthcare costs and the freedom to see any doctor who accepts Medicare.

What Plan G covers

  • Part A hospital coinsurance and costs (up to 365 extra days)
  • Part B coinsurance or copayment
  • Blood (first 3 pints)
  • Part A hospice care coinsurance or copayment
  • Skilled nursing facility care coinsurance
  • Part A deductible
  • Part B excess charges
  • Foreign travel emergency care (up to plan limits)

The one thing Plan G doesn't cover: the annual Medicare Part B deductible. Once you pay that deductible, Plan G picks up nearly all of your remaining Medicare-approved costs for the rest of the year.

How much does Plan G cost?

Plan G premiums vary based on your age, location, and the insurance company. Because the coverage is standardized by Medicare, every insurer's Plan G offers the same benefits — so comparing prices is the best way to save. A licensed agent can compare Plan G quotes from multiple carriers in your area at no cost to you.
